Collection: Sterile Grain

Our sterilised grain bags are ideal for growing gourmet, exotic or functional mushroom spawn. Why choose grain instead of an all-in-one bag? You'll get much larger yields this way! Simply add your mushroom genetics to your sterilised grain bag and allow it to colonise. Then, add your DIY mushroom spawn to one of our substrate bags. All grain bags are made fresh in small batches before being sterilised for 2 hours and 30 minutes in our medical grade autoclave.

Sterilised Grain FAQ's

What Is Sterilised Grain?

Sterilised grains are a sterile bag of grains that provides a nutritious, contamination-free environment for mycelium to grow on before transferring to a bulk substrate.

Why Use Sterilised Grain?

Sterile grain is a great starting point for spores/liquid cultures if you don't fancy using agar. Plus, as most mushroom strains won't grow directly on bulk substrates, colonised grains will give you enough points of inoculation to colonise substrate rapidly. For details on how to use sterile grains, check out our guides.

How Do You Make Grain Spawn?

To make grain spawn, just inoculate any of these bags of sterile grain with a spore syringe or liquid culture and let them grow! Once mycelium has fully colonised the bag of grain, you can safely call it grain spawn.

How Long Will My Sterilised Grains Last?

Sterile grain bags can keep for up to 3 months when stored in a cool, dry room and out of direct sunlight.

How Are Your Grains Sterilised?

We sterilise all our grains in bags inside our medical grade autoclave for 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a pressure of at least 15 PSI and a temperature of 121ºC. Then, we seal the bags in front of a laminar flow hood in our clean room.

Do You Offer Wholesale Sterilised Grains?

Yes! We automatically apply discounts on bulk orders of up to 100 sterile grain bags. If you're after a customer order or want a wholesale quote for sterile grain bags, then just contact us directly.
