Mushroom Yield Calculator
Plan your mushroom grows with precision. This tool helps you estimate expected yields or determine how much fruiting substrate you’ll need to reach a target harvest. Select your species, set your Biological Efficiency (BE), and explore how moisture and flushes affect total yield outcomes.
BE is fresh yield as a % of dry substrate across all flushes. “Mid” uses your editable BE; “Low” and “High” use species defaults. Reverse mode sizes substrate using Low BE to avoid under-prep.
Mushroom Yield Calculator FAQ:
How does this calculator estimate mushroom yields?
It uses Biological Efficiency (BE) – the total fresh mushroom weight as a percentage of the dry substrate weight. Select a species (or “Other”), a substrate type, and moisture %, then the calculator converts your wet substrate weight into dry weight and applies your chosen BE to estimate yields. It displays Low, Mid, and High yield ranges based on typical BE values for each species.
What is Biological Efficiency (BE) and can I change it?
Yes you can change the Biological Efficiency. BE represents how efficiently mushrooms convert substrate nutrients into fresh fruiting bodies. Each species loads with default Low / Mid / High BE values, but you can edit the Mid BE field to match your own experience or strain performance. The calculator uses your BE value for “Mid” yield predictions, while “Low” and “High” stay as fixed reference ranges.
What if my species isn’t listed?
Select “Other (set your BE)”. This option lets you enter any BE you like. It’s ideal for uncommon species, experimental strains, or new recipes. Simply estimate or test your BE and adjust the input until results align with your actual yields.
Can I plan backwards from a target harvest?
Yes, you can plan backwards from a target harvest.. Switch to Plan by Harvest, enter the total amount of fresh mushrooms you want to produce, and the calculator shows the minimum wet substrate needed to reach that yield in a worst-case scenario (using the Low BE). It also displays what that same amount of substrate might yield at your Mid and High BE values.
How do the flush and moisture settings affect results?
Moisture determines how much of your wet substrate is actually dry matter (default 60%). Flush settings split the total yield across 1-3 flushes. For example, 70/30 for two flushes or 50/30/20 for three. These don’t change the total BE; they simply show how yield might distribute over successive harvests. You can edit both moisture % and flush share values to reflect your own conditions/experience.
